SnIPA is described by its makers as a classic India Pale Ale with a maritime touch. Most breweries would express such a maritime touch in the form of a little sea salt or hops that taste like pine resin - but not Smögenbryggar’n! The Swedish brewers conjure up the sea breeze into their beer using finger tang. This subspecies of brown algae can be found in the North and Baltic Seas as well as in the North Atlantic and is usually harvested for the production of fertilizer, soaps and glass or for cooking. The seaweed is rich in potassium and calcium and, due to its mild spice, is ideal as a base for soups and sauces.
However, its taste, which is somewhere between mushroom, potato and sea, plays no role in the IPA. Generous amounts of Amarillo, Citra, Mosaic and Pacific Gem hops give the beer a tropical fruitiness that dominates the aromatics. In addition to the tropical fruit aroma, the green gold provides notes of pine resin, citrus fruit and forest herbs, which harmonize wonderfully with the caramel sweetness and biscuit notes of the malt. A crisp, bitter finish crowns the maritime beer enjoyment.
The included finger kelp gives SnIPA the finishing touch and gives the brewery the opportunity to support local algae cultivation and to highlight the treasures of our seas in a subtle way.
